Birds food: the complete PetFoodRate 2026 guide

Pet birds, especially parrots and parakeets, are vulnerable to two extremes: a seed-only diet that creates fatty liver and vitamin deficiencies, and a pellet-only diet that misses behavioural enrichment. The modern recommendation from avian vets is a base of formulated pellets (60 to 70 percent of intake) plus fresh vegetables and limited fruit. PetFoodRate grades bird food from A to E based on whether it is pellets vs seeds-only, ingredient quality, vitamin balance, and species adaptability.

What to look for

  • Formulated pellets as base (Harrison's, Roudybush, Tropican)
  • Vitamin A, D3, E, and calcium explicitly listed
  • Clean ingredient list without artificial colors
  • Species-specific formulation (cockatiel pellets are not the same as macaw pellets)

What to avoid

  • Seed-only mixes (especially sunflower-heavy ones - the equivalent of feeding a child only chips)
  • Honey sticks, millet sprays, and other sugar treats fed daily
  • Pellets with artificial colors and flavors marketed to humans, not birds
  • Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, raw beans (all toxic)

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch my bird from seeds to pellets?

Birds are notoriously stubborn about new foods. Transition slowly over 4 to 8 weeks. Start by mixing 10 percent pellets into the seed mix and increase by 10 percent every few days. Offer pellets in the morning when the bird is hungriest. Try different shapes and brands. Some birds need to see other birds eating pellets first. Never starve a bird into accepting new food - they can die from a 24-hour fast.

What vegetables are best for birds?

Dark leafy greens (kale, romaine, spinach in moderation), bell peppers (very high in vitamin A), broccoli, sweet potato cooked, carrots, peas, green beans. Offer a variety daily. Avoid avocado (toxic), iceberg lettuce (no nutrition), and raw onion or garlic. Cooked grains and legumes (quinoa, brown rice, lentils) are also excellent for larger parrots.

How long do bird food bags stay fresh?

Pellets stay fresh about 4 to 6 weeks after opening. Always store in airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place. Never refrigerate (humidity causes mold). For seeds, the rule is similar but they go rancid faster - smell test before each use. Buying smaller bags more frequently is better than bulk purchasing if you have a small bird.
